When is my next oil change?

Your next change is due at the mileage or the date on your windshield sticker, whichever comes first. No sticker? Your owner’s manual gives the interval. Our rule is every 5 months or 5,000 miles, whichever comes first, and sooner for towing, dusty roads or lots of short trips.

Dipstick

How do I read my dipstick?

Five minutes in the driveway, and you’ll know if the engine needs oil.

  1. Turn the engine off and set the parking brake. Check your owner’s manual for whether to check warm or cold.
  2. Pull the dipstick and wipe it with a clean, lint-free rag or paper towel. Parts of the engine can still be hot.
  3. Push it back in until it’s fully seated, then pull it out again.
  4. Read where the oil sits between the two marks.

The oil should sit between the Low and Full marks. Low: add a little at a time, with the same grade already in the engine, and check again. Above Full is too much. Not sure? Call (805) 745-1992.

Common questions about oil changes

How often should I change my oil?

We recommend every 5 months or 5,000 miles, whichever comes first, and sooner when you tow. Your manual has the exact number for your vehicle.

Synthetic or conventional?

Synthetic holds up better to heat and lasts longer. Your manual will say what your engine needs.

What oil does my truck use?

The oil cap or the manual lists it. For example, many older Toyota V8s call for 5W-30.

Can I go over the interval?

A little, once. Going far over lets sludge build up and wears the engine.

I’m just passing through Carpinteria. Can you help?

Call (805) 745-1992 first and tell us what it’s doing. We’ll tell you whether to bring it in and what to expect. We’re on Carpinteria Ave, and Carpinteria is right on Highway 101. We’re open Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
