See it on the 3D model1 part, what to check and when to change itHow do you know it’s time for a flat repair?

- The tire pressure light is on.A drop of a few pounds in a day or two means a slow leak.
- You hear hissing.Stop driving.
- A tire looks low.Even if it’s not flat, driving on it low damages the sidewall.
- A blowout. If the sidewall tore, the tire can’t be repaired and needs replacing.

Patch or replace?
Can my tire be patched?
The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association sets the rules most shops follow. A puncture can be repaired only if it’s in the tread, no bigger than 1/4 inch across, and doesn’t reach the shoulder or sidewall. A plug alone isn’t a proper repair: it takes a plug and a patch together, done from inside the tire.

Wheel on
What order do the lug nuts go in?
Tighten them in the wrong order and the wheel can seat crooked. Try the pattern.
Tighten one nut, then the one across from it, then move on to the next pair, so the wheel pulls down evenly. On a five-nut wheel, skip one nut each time, which draws a star. Final tightening is done with a calibrated torque wrench to the number in your owner’s manual.
Tap nut 1 to start.

Common questions about flat repair
Can every flat be repaired?
No. Only punctures in the tread area, about a quarter inch or smaller, qualify. Sidewall damage means a new tire.
Is a plug enough?
A plug from the outside alone is a temporary fix. A patch-plug applied from the inside is the proper repair. That is the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association standard, and its puncture repair chart hangs in our front office.
Do I need an appointment?
No. We take walk-ins when we have the time, and we help the same day when we can. Call (805) 745-1992 and I’ll tell you how busy we are.
Can I drive on a flat to get to you?
Try not to. Driving on a flat can ruin the tire. If you can, put on the spare or call for roadside help.
Do you repair RV and truck tires?
It depends on the tire. Call us with the size and we’ll tell you what we can do.
I’m just passing through Carpinteria. Can you help?
Call (805) 745-1992 first and tell us what it’s doing. We’ll tell you whether to bring it in and what to expect. We’re on Carpinteria Ave, and Carpinteria is right on Highway 101. We’re open Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
