Our story

On this corner since 1987.

Abel Zuniga, owner of Beach Motor & Tires, at the front counter
That’s me at the counter. The carved dolphin is one of about 100 in the shop.

I’ve worked on cars since I was a kid, and I never expected the hobby to turn into my trade. In 1987 I started busting tires at the repair shop on the corner of Carpinteria Avenue and Elm Street.

I worked that corner for years before I could call it my own. In 2000 I opened Beach Motor & Tires there, and I’ve been fixing Carpinteria’s cars, trucks and RVs ever since. I raised three kids in town, and I told the Coastal View I couldn’t imagine running the business anywhere else.

What I said then still holds: what works is having people trust me, trusting them back, and doing good work. A customer in that same article called me Honest Abe. People still say it in their own words today.

What’s worked for me more than anything else is to have people trust me, to give them my trust and to provide good service for them.

Dash check

Turn the key. Which light stays on?

Most cars light up every warning lamp for a second or two when you turn the key to on. The car is checking its own bulbs. Turn the key, watch them go out, then tap the one that stays on in yours.

Tap a light for what it usually means. This is a general guide, not a diagnosis. Your owner’s manual shows the lights in your car.

Before you call

No surprises. Here’s how it works.

Handing your keys to a shop takes trust, and I want to earn yours. Here is how a visit works, start to finish, plus the rights you have at any shop in California.

How a visit works

  1. Call (805) 745-1992. Tell us the year, make and model and what it’s doing. You talk to the shop, not a call center.
  2. Get a free quote. Call for your price. We give you the number before we start.
  3. You say yes first. Nothing gets fixed until you approve the work and the price.
  4. We fix it and walk you through it. What we did, what we found, and what can wait.

Have these ready

  • Year, make and model
  • What it’s doing, and when it started
  • Any warning lights on the dash
  • For tires, the size on the sidewall or the driver’s door jamb (how to read it)
  • Traveling? Where you are, so we can tell you whether to keep driving

Your rights at any California repair shop

  • A written estimate before any work starts
  • Nothing is done, or added, without your authorization
  • An itemized invoice that lists parts and labor
  • Your replaced parts back, if you ask for them when you authorize the work

From California’s Automotive Repair Act. Beach Motor & Tires is a state-registered Automotive Repair Dealer, no. 214418, with the Bureau of Automotive Repair (opens in a new tab).

My dolphins, all 100-plus of them.

About 100 carved, cast and painted dolphins live in the front office, on the shelves, on the walls and beside the counter. Dolphins are my favorite animal. There’s a fish tank and a surfboard too, so come say hello while you wait.

Questions

Common questions.

How do I get a quote?

Call (805) 745-1992 and tell us the year, make and model and what it’s doing. Quotes are free, and you talk to the shop, not a call center.

Do you charge to look at my vehicle?

It depends on what it needs. Call (805) 745-1992 and tell us what it’s doing, and we’ll tell you how we’d start and what to expect.

Do I need an appointment?

No. We take walk-ins when we have the time, and we help the same day when we can. Call (805) 745-1992 and I’ll tell you how busy we are.

Can you fix it the same day?

We help the same day whenever we can. It depends on the job and the parts. A simple tire repair can be quick, and some repairs have to wait on a part. Call me with what it’s doing and I’ll give you an honest answer before you wait around.

I’m traveling and my vehicle broke down near Carpinteria. Can you help?

Call (805) 745-1992 before you drive any farther. Tell us what it’s doing and where you are, and we’ll tell you straight whether to bring it in. We work on cars, trucks, motorhomes and trailers, and motorhomes need a call ahead because space at the shop is limited. We’re on Carpinteria Ave, and Carpinteria is right on Highway 101. We’re open Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

What forms of payment do you take?

Visa and Mastercard. There is also an Acima sign on the door for a no-credit-needed, 90-day payment option. Ask at the counter how it works.
